The new John Molson School of Business building
In August 2009, the John Molson School of Business moved into its new building in downtown Montreal. For the first time, all 7,000 students (enrolled full or part-time) are accommodated under a single roof.
This new building includes: amphitheatres and classrooms with digital equipment, offices of graduate students and faculty, the Dean’s office, social spaces dedicated to students, a trading room, as well as spaces for private programs. In addition, there are also 36 study rooms for group work and consumer behaviour research laboratories. Finally, there are several recreational areas to comfortably accommodate our students.
Like most buildings downtown, the new building, on the corner of Guy and De Maisonneuve, does not occupy a large area but is 15 stories high with two basement floors. Among its characteristics, we find an atrium piled onto two floors, a ground floor vertically connected, and a tunnel under Guy leading to the metro and the integrated Engineering, Computer Science, and Visual Arts building.
With the LEED certification and amongst the most advanced solar technology, the John Molson building is one of the “greenest” buildings of the world. It should be noted that the LEED certification is the national benchmark for the design, construction, and operations of the “green” buildings of high quality.
Internationally, it is the first demonstration generating a combination of heat and electricity using photovoltaic panels from Day4Energy and Solarwall© technologies. This consists of 300m2 of Solarwall© panels capturing solar heat so as to spread fresh air into the building and 25kW of photovoltaic panels converting solar energy into electricity.
The panels are perforated and connected to electrical and thermal systems and will ultimately provide heat and light to the building, as well as fresh air.
